Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk revealed on Wednesday that the company has been running tests with self-driving Model Y vehicles in Austin, Texas, for several days, and plans to begin having the cars deliver themselves to customers starting in June.
“For the past several days, Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars (no one in driver’s seat) on Austin public streets with no incidents,” Musk shared via social media.
He added, “Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer,” noting that this rollout is ahead of the originally planned schedule by about a month.
Musk has often highlighted Tesla’s self-driving technology as a key growth area for the company, especially as it faces a slowdown in vehicle sales.
Previously, Musk indicated that Tesla would also start testing its highly anticipated robotaxi service in Austin by the end of June.
However, Tesla is currently under increased regulatory scrutiny concerning its self-driving claims. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Tesla’s full self-driving system, which has been linked to multiple accidents in poor visibility conditions since last year.
