Trump Claims China Breached Trade Deal, Questions Past Conciliatory Approach

Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized China’s recent trade actions in a post on Truth Social Friday, asserting that Beijing had broken the terms of a prior agreement made during his presidency. Trump claimed his administration’s imposition of steep tariffs had placed intense economic pressure on China, making it increasingly difficult for the country to maintain its trading relationship with what he called “the greatest market on Earth.”

Trump likened the U.S.’s shift in trade policy to abruptly cutting ties – a “cold turkey” approach – which he said disrupted China’s economy, shutting down factories and stirring civil unrest. In response to what he viewed as mounting turmoil, Trump said he acted swiftly to strike a deal with Chinese leaders, aiming to help them stabilize the situation before it worsened.

According to Trump, that agreement temporarily eased tensions and allowed Chinese industry to recover, restoring business activity and bringing a sense of normalcy. However, he now claims that China has failed to uphold its end of the bargain, accusing the country of completely disregarding the agreed-upon terms.

Reflecting on the events, Trump expressed regret over his willingness to offer flexibility, sarcastically referring to himself as “Mr. Nice Guy” and questioning whether a tougher stance would have been more appropriate.
