Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly considering a bid to secure the U.S. broadcasting rights for Formula 1, aiming to rival Disney-ESPN when the current contract comes up for renewal next year, according to the Financial Times. Sources close to the discussions revealed that Apple’s interest has been fueled by the strong reception of its recent Formula 1-themed film starring Brad Pitt.
The movie, produced by Apple and released through its Apple TV+ service, achieved notable box office success, earning over $300 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $200 million and $300 million. This marks Apple’s first major theatrical hit since expanding into original content creation.
Apple’s pursuit of Formula 1 rights fits within its broader strategy to deepen its foothold in live sports streaming. The company already holds deals to stream Major League Baseball Friday night games and Major League Soccer matches across North America.
Formula 1 has not yet announced its future U.S. broadcast plans, leaving the door open for ESPN to retain the rights. ESPN had an exclusive negotiation window with Formula 1 last year, but no deal was finalized.
