Airo Reveals Plans for Long-Range Cargo Drone to Challenge Traditional Freight

Airo (NASDAQ:AIRO) has unveiled a new cargo drone project aimed at offering a high-tech alternative to standard freight transport methods such as box trucks and tractor-trailers.

The New Mexico-based aerospace company said the upcoming drone will be capable of carrying loads between 250 and 500 pounds across distances of at least 200 miles. The design will incorporate technologies from Airo’s Jaunt electric air mobility division and feature hybrid capabilities—offering vertical takeoff like a helicopter combined with the efficient cruising of a fixed-wing aircraft.

“[T]his cargo drone represents a strategic milestone — delivering advanced air mobility solutions to customers sooner while building the foundation for potential future mixed-use and passenger services,” said Joe Burns, Airo’s Chief Executive Officer.

The aircraft will also be supported by a comprehensive ground control platform that includes real-time flight tracking and secure communication channels, the company noted. Martin Peryea, head of Jaunt, described the vehicle as an “innovative solution” that aims to meet the transportation needs of both remote and densely populated regions.

Airo also revealed that Jaunt will lead the company’s expansion into the YMX Innovation Zone, a specialized aerospace hub located within a Quebec cargo airport. The site already hosts major industry players like Airbus, Safran (EPA:SAF), and Pratt & Whitney, according to Aeroports de Montreal.

By establishing operations at YMX, Jaunt aims to accelerate the transition from design to deployment. “[W]e’re creating a scalable, interoperable ecosystem that addresses both cargo and passenger needs. Our expansion into the YMX Innovation Zone accelerates this vision,” said Chirinjeev Kathuria, Airo’s Executive Chairman.

The announcement comes shortly after Airo’s public debut in June, when it priced its IPO at $10 per share. As of Monday’s close, the stock was trading at $22.89.
