IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) saw its stock climb 1.3% following news of a strategic partnership with Australia-based research firm Emergence Quantum aimed at advancing ion trap quantum computing technologies.
The collaboration will focus on co-developing cutting-edge materials and electronics, particularly in designing and simulating application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for qubit control. Efforts will also be made to simplify hardware architecture, scale system capabilities, and explore innovative materials and deposition techniques to boost ion trap performance.
Emergence Quantum brings deep industry expertise, having been founded by former quantum leaders from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Raytheon. Its CEO, Professor David Reilly, spent nearly a decade in Microsoft’s quantum division, while CTO and CSO Thomas Ohki previously led quantum efforts at Raytheon’s BBN Technologies.
“This collaboration furthers IonQ’s efforts to tap into one of the world’s most promising quantum talent pools while contributing meaningfully to Australia’s growing quantum industry,” said Dr. Dean Kassmann, SVP of Engineering and Technology at IonQ.
The partnership adds to IonQ’s expanding footprint in Australia, including its ongoing work with the Australian National University, and aligns with its broader strategy to engage with leading quantum research centers worldwide.
Prof. Reilly added, “We see tremendous demand in Australia for quantum technology so we are delighted to partner with IonQ to advance quantum innovation in the country. The challenge in Australia has always been how to bring in international investment, without losing the key know-how and talent that we have here.”
