Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is extending its Same-Day Delivery service for fresh groceries to over 1,000 cities and towns, with ambitions to cover more than 2,300 locations by the close of 2025.
Customers can now order perishable items—including fresh produce, meat, seafood, dairy, baked goods, and frozen products—alongside millions of other same-day delivery items. Prime members benefit from free delivery on orders above $25, while non-members pay a flat fee of $12.99 per order, regardless of size.
The service was initially tested in Phoenix, Orlando, and Kansas City, where shoppers purchasing fresh food returned twice as often as those who didn’t buy perishables. Following this success, Same-Day Delivery has expanded to cities such as Raleigh, Milwaukee, Tampa, and Columbus.
“We’re continuously innovating to make grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for our customers, especially Prime members,” said Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores. “By introducing fresh groceries into our Same-Day Delivery service, we’re creating a quick and easy experience for customers.”
Amazon operates temperature-controlled fulfillment centers and conducts six-point quality inspections on perishable goods. Deliveries arrive in insulated bags, most of which can be recycled through curbside programs.
This expansion complements Amazon’s existing grocery platforms, including Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market. In 2024, the company reported generating more than $100 billion in gross sales of groceries and household essentials, excluding Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh sales.
The retailer plans to continue rolling out the service to more cities through 2026.
