Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) announced Wednesday evening that its Robotaxi app is now accessible to the general public, suggesting the company may expand its autonomous ride-hailing services beyond limited areas in Austin, Texas.
“Robotaxi app now available to all,” Tesla said in a post on X. Users can download the app to join a waitlist, with the company noting that it was “expanding access soon.”
Currently, the app is compatible only with iPhones, while Tesla confirmed that Android support is “coming in the future.”
In June, Tesla began public testing of its robotaxi service in Austin, but the program was restricted to investors, analysts, and social media influencers. The company was observed deploying Model Ys outfitted with self-driving technology rather than the dedicated Robotaxi model introduced in 2024.
Tesla also rolled out ride-hailing operations in the San Francisco Bay Area in late July, albeit with a human driver, as the company is not yet authorized to offer fully autonomous services in California.
Wednesday’s announcement hints at a potential scaling up of the Austin Robotaxi operations. CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly highlighted self-driving technology and robotaxis as one of Tesla’s next major growth avenues, particularly as the automaker navigates an extended period of declining sales.
