Honeywell (NASDAQ:HON) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Redwire Corporation (NYSE:RDW) to advance satellite communication systems secured through quantum technology, as part of a project supported by the European Space Agency.
The agreement represents a significant step for the Quantum Key Distribution Satellite (QKDSat) consortium, which Honeywell has led since its inception in 2024. Through the partnership, Honeywell will integrate its quantum optical payload with Redwire’s quantum platform technology to deliver a fully operational system by mid-2026.
The collaboration is designed to create solutions that safeguard sensitive government and defense data against cyber and quantum threats while also offering quantum key distribution services to commercial clients.
QKDSat brings together companies from ESA member nations—including Belgium, Austria, Canada, Czechia, and the United Kingdom—to develop a highly secure telecommunications satellite for private data exchange.
“The defense and space communications landscapes are evolving rapidly, with security and resiliency now the top priority for governments and critical industries,” said Lisa Napolitano, vice president and general manager, Space, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies.
In addition to government use, the partners aim to showcase quantum communications for commercial entities such as financial institutions, telecom operators, and critical infrastructure companies handling large volumes of confidential data.
Marc Dielissen, General Manager of Redwire Space Belgium, described quantum-enabled telecommunications as “a gamechanger for government agencies and the private sector,” emphasizing that the partnership is focused on “delivering cutting edge innovation to mitigate increasingly sophisticated threats.”
