GM issues recall for 23,700 Chevrolet Equinox EVs over pedestrian alert sound concern

General Motors (NYSE:GM) is initiating a recall affecting 23,700 units of certain 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EVs due to a problem with the pedestrian alert sound system.

A notice submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explained that the system in these electric vehicles may not sufficiently adjust the alert volume when the car transitions from a stationary position to low-speed movement.

“This defect means the vehicles fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Number 141, which sets ‘Minimum Sound Requirements for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles,’” the notice stated.

The inadequate sound adjustment could prevent pedestrians from noticing an approaching vehicle, increasing the risk of accidents or injuries.

The recall specifically applies to 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV models.
