Walmart (NYSE:WMT) stock gained 2% on Tuesday after the company announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI aimed at integrating advanced AI tools into the shopping experience — a development welcomed by investors.
Through the new collaboration, customers will soon be able to shop at Walmart directly via ChatGPT using a feature called Instant Checkout. This tool will enable shoppers to make purchases seamlessly within chat conversations while meal planning, restocking household items, or discovering new products.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon outlined the company’s ambition to redefine digital commerce. “There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual,” McMillon said in the announcement.
The retailer has already incorporated AI technology into several areas of its operations. According to the company, AI has shortened fashion production timelines by as much as 18 weeks and reduced customer service resolution times by up to 40%.
In addition to upgrading its customer experience, Walmart is also enhancing its workforce capabilities. The company is promoting AI literacy through OpenAI Certifications and rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise to internal teams.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented on the partnership, calling it “one way AI will help people every day under our work together,” emphasizing how the integration aims to simplify routine shopping experiences.
The collaboration underscores Walmart’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to stay ahead in the retail sector, while continuing to prioritize affordability and convenience for its customers.
