IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) climbed 3.5% in premarket trading after announcing it has become a founding member of Q-Alliance, a new initiative aimed at establishing a quantum technology hub in Lombardy, Italy.
The partnership supports Italy’s National Strategy for Quantum Technologies, bringing together public and private players to build a robust quantum ecosystem. The launch took place at the ComoLake2025 Digital Innovation Forum.
As part of the initiative, IonQ will contribute its strengths in gate-based, universal quantum computing, as well as expertise in quantum networking, security, and sensing. The Q-Alliance seeks to provide infrastructure to accelerate research, innovation, and real-world quantum applications in fields such as pharmaceuticals, materials science, logistics, and financial services.
“IonQ enables a fantastic opportunity for Italy to lead a ‘Quantum Renaissance’ with the potential to transform not only the country but the EU,” said Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ.
The initiative follows Italy’s unveiling of its National Strategy for Quantum Technologies, which emphasizes building advanced infrastructure, fostering industrial applications, nurturing talent, and ensuring responsible use of quantum innovations.
Undersecretary Alessio Butti described Q-Alliance as “not only a technological milestone but also a model of open innovation and cooperation, a symbol of Italian leadership in the European quantum transition.”
The move strengthens IonQ’s global expansion, adding Italy to its growing presence across the UK, Europe, and Asia.
