Getty Images Holdings Inc (NYSE:GETY) saw its shares soar 58% in premarket trading on Friday after unveiling a new licensing partnership with AI-driven search platform Perplexity, marking another major collaboration between traditional media and artificial intelligence firms.
Under the agreement, Perplexity will gain access to Getty’s extensive creative and editorial photo archive, integrating it into its AI-powered search and content generation tools. The partnership will also make use of Getty’s API technology to seamlessly embed licensed visuals into Perplexity’s platform.
As part of the arrangement, Perplexity will feature full image credits with clickable source links, helping educate users about the legal and ethical use of licensed material.
“We are pleased to reach this agreement with Perplexity, which acknowledges the importance of properly attributed content and its value in enhancing AI-powered products,” said Nick Unsworth, Vice President of Strategic Development at Getty Images.
Jessica Chan, Head of Content and Publisher Partnerships at Perplexity, added that “Attribution and accuracy are fundamental to how people should understand the world in an age of AI.”
The partnership not only reinforces the value of accurate attribution for Getty contributors, but also strengthens Perplexity’s AI platform by integrating premium visual assets. The collaboration underscores a broader industry shift toward responsible AI development, as companies look to balance innovation with copyright protection.
