Google Secures Solar Power Supply in Malaysia, Report Says

Google, part of Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL), has reached an agreement to source solar energy in Malaysia, advancing its strategy to power global operations with clean electricity, according to a Bloomberg report published Monday.

The deal involves Google purchasing power from a 30-megawatt solar facility in the state of Kedah. The project is being developed by a consortium led by the Malaysian arm of Japan-based Shizen Energy, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The solar plant is expected to come online in 2027 and aligns with Malaysia’s efforts to attract multinational investment by expanding access to renewable energy options. The agreement highlights the growing push by large technology companies to reduce the carbon footprint of energy-intensive operations such as data centres, even as many parts of Asia continue to depend heavily on fossil fuels.

A Google representative has previously described Asia as one of the most challenging regions for emissions reduction, Bloomberg noted. Malaysia, meanwhile, is targeting renewables to account for 70% of its installed power capacity by 2050, up from roughly 26% last year, according to BloombergNEF.
