Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) said on Thursday that it is introducing a new wave of Gemini AI features in Gmail aimed at making inbox management faster and more intuitive.
The update adds AI Overviews, which automatically condense long email threads into short summaries highlighting the most important details. Users can also pose natural-language questions about their inbox—such as “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?”—without manually searching through past messages.
Conversation summaries generated by AI Overviews are starting to roll out today for all Gmail users at no charge. However, the interactive question-and-answer functionality tied to AI Overviews will be reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
Google is also expanding access to its Help Me Write feature, making it available to all users beginning Thursday. The tool can refine existing emails or create new drafts from scratch. In addition, the company is upgrading Smart Replies with new Suggested Replies, which provide one-click responses tailored to a user’s writing style and the context of the conversation.
For Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, a new Proofread option adds more advanced checks for grammar, tone and style before emails are sent. Looking ahead, Google plans to further enhance Help Me Write next month by incorporating context from other Google applications to improve personalization.
Another feature in development is AI Inbox, designed to reduce clutter by surfacing priority messages and tasks. AI Inbox identifies VIP contacts using factors such as email frequency, contact lists and relationship cues drawn from message content. This feature is currently being tested with a limited group and is expected to roll out more broadly in the coming months.
All of these enhancements are powered by Gemini 3 and are beginning to launch in the U.S. starting Thursday for Gmail users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with additional languages and regions to follow.
Google said Gmail now serves around 3 billion users globally.
