U.S. Inflation Data Shows December Price Gains in Line With Forecasts

Consumer prices in the United States rose broadly as anticipated in December, according to figures released Tuesday by the Labor Department.

The report showed that the consumer price index increased by 0.3% over the month, matching economists’ expectations.

When volatile food and energy components are excluded, core consumer prices edged up 0.2% in December, coming in slightly below forecasts for a 0.3% rise.

On a year-over-year basis, headline inflation held steady at 2.7% in December, unchanged from November and in line with consensus estimates. Core inflation also remained unchanged at 2.6%, defying expectations for a modest increase to 2.7%.
