AMC reports second-strongest box office weekend of 2026

AMC Theatres (NYSE:AMC) said the film Project Hail Mary delivered the company’s biggest opening weekend of 2026, helping drive its second-highest weekend of the year for admissions revenue both in the United States and globally.

The movie, distributed by Amazon MGM, generated more than $140 million in worldwide box office revenue during its opening weekend. AMC said its global admissions revenue for the same period was more than 70% higher than during the comparable weekend in 2025.

“Project Hail Mary is a terrific example of how original storytelling combined with expert marketing of the theatrical experience can resonate with audiences and deliver meaningful results at the box office,” said AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron.

The performance continues a positive year-over-year trend for AMC in 2026. Aron said the strong run of box office results this year supports the company’s view that “2026 will wind up being the biggest year since 2019 for moviegoing in theatres.”

AMC currently operates about 855 theatres and 9,640 screens worldwide, making it the largest movie theatre operator in the United States and globally. The company said the weekend’s revenue was supported not only by Project Hail Mary but also by other new releases and ongoing titles, as well as premium viewing formats such as IMAX at AMC and Dolby Cinema at AMC.
