Lockheed Martin conducts first live tracking test with SPY-7 radar

Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) has carried out the first live target tracking test of its SPY-7 radar system, the defense contractor said, in an exercise conducted alongside the U.S. Department of War, the Missile Defense Agency and Japan’s Ministry of Defense.

The SPY-7 radar used during the test is slated for deployment in Japan, where it will be installed on the country’s first Aegis System Equipped Vessel (ASEV). During the exercise, the ASEV platform demonstrated its ability to search for, detect, identify, track and distinguish live targets, ultimately concluding the test with simulated engagement scenarios.

“Successful completion of the first live target tracking exercise of the ASEV system affirms that our integrated Aegis system is ready to detect, track and engage targets, showcasing Lockheed Martin’s ability to deliver rapid solutions in partnership with the Department of War and Japanese allies,” said Chandra Marshall, vice president of Multi-Domain Combat Solutions at Lockheed Martin.

The SPY-7 radar system is designed to counter a wide range of threats while allowing operators to engage multiple targets at the same time. The technology is expected to strengthen naval defense capabilities through improved detection and tracking performance.
