LanzaTech Global Inc. (NASDAQ:LNZA) has selected North Sea Port in Ghent, Belgium as the site for Europe’s first commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel plant using alcohol-to-jet technology.
The company confirmed that it has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment scoping notification to Belgian regulators as part of the development process for the FLITE project.
Facility to Produce SAF for European and International Markets
The planned plant will use LanzaTech’s proprietary alcohol-to-jet conversion technology to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel compliant with major regulatory frameworks, including CORSIA, the EU’s ReFuelEU Aviation programme and the UK SAF Mandate.
The development forms part of the FLITE consortium, which is backed by funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.
Construction of the facility is expected to support around 300 full-time equivalent jobs over a three-year period, while approximately 50 permanent roles are anticipated once the site becomes operational.
The facility will be positioned near ArcelorMittal’s Steelanol ethanol plant, located across the canal from the selected development area.
“This is a world-class location that gives the project every advantage it needs to succeed,” said Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech.
The company added that front-end engineering and design work for the project is largely complete, while letters of intent covering feedstock supply and fuel offtake arrangements have already been secured.
North Sea Port Offers Strategic Industrial Infrastructure
North Sea Port stretches roughly 60 kilometres between Vlissingen in the Netherlands and Ghent in Belgium. According to the company announcement, the port processes around 67 million tonnes of cargo annually and ranks as the ninth-largest port in Europe by cargo throughput.
LanzaTech specialises in gas fermentation technology that converts carbon-rich industrial waste streams into fuels and chemicals. The company is headquartered in the United States and focuses on developing low-carbon industrial solutions aimed at supporting decarbonisation efforts across multiple sectors.
