U.S. stock futures pointed to a slightly weaker opening on Wednesday, suggesting equities may pull back after posting modest gains over the last several sessions.
Investor sentiment remains cautious as uncertainty surrounding the Middle East continues to linger, with diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran showing little sign of a breakthrough.
Geopolitical Tensions Remain in Focus
According to U.S. Central Command, American forces successfully intercepted multiple Iranian ballistic missiles and drones before carrying out what it described as “self-defense” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island following attempted attacks by Tehran on Tuesday.
The ongoing military confrontation has helped drive energy prices sharply higher, with U.S. crude futures climbing nearly 3%.
Despite these developments, equity markets have recently demonstrated resilience, supported by confidence in corporate earnings and expectations that economic growth will remain solid.
“For now, risk appetite remains supported, but with stretched valuations and shifting monetary policy expectations, markets appear increasingly sensitive to any signs that the earnings and growth story may begin to soften,” said Daniela Hathorn, Senior Market Analyst at Capital.com.
Stocks Continue to Hover Near Record Highs
Wall Street overcame early weakness on Tuesday to finish modestly higher, with all three major U.S. indices closing at fresh record highs for a third consecutive session.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 228.91 points, or 0.5%, to end at 51,307.79.
The Nasdaq Composite edged up 7.09 points, less than 0.1%, closing at 27,093.90, while the S&P 500 gained 9.82 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 7,609.82.
Oil Rally Limits Investor Enthusiasm
Recent gains in equities had been supported by hopes that the conflict between the United States and Iran could move toward a resolution.
However, contrasting comments from U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have tempered expectations for a near-term breakthrough.
At the same time, the rebound in oil prices has created an additional headwind for risk assets.
Crude prices advanced strongly on Tuesday after progress on a proposed U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding stalled. Concerns have also been heightened by warnings from global energy agencies about a faster-than-expected drawdown in oil inventories.
AI Optimism Continues to Support Market Sentiment
While geopolitical uncertainty has encouraged some investors to remain on the sidelines, enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence has continued to provide support for equities.
The AI investment theme remains one of the strongest drivers of market sentiment, helping offset concerns linked to geopolitical risks and rising energy costs.
For now, investors appear to be balancing confidence in earnings and technology-led growth against the risks posed by an increasingly uncertain geopolitical backdrop.
