Maserati unveiled refreshed versions of its GranTurismo, GranCabrio and Grecale models on Thursday as parent company Stellantis (BIT:STLAM) prepares to outline a new long-term strategy for the luxury marque later this year.
The model updates come ahead of a capital markets event scheduled for December, where management is expected to present plans aimed at revitalising the Italian brand following a difficult period marked by weak sales and mounting losses.
Stellantis Signals New Direction for Maserati
During the presentation of Stellantis’ business strategy last month, Chief Executive Antonio Filosa reiterated the group’s commitment to the luxury automaker.
Filosa said Stellantis plans “to strengthen Maserati’s future as a pure luxury brand”, including with two new large-sized vehicles.
The executive also confirmed that a next-generation version of the Grecale SUV is expected to join the lineup in 2027.
Refreshed Range Gains New Technology and Performance Upgrades
Maserati’s current portfolio includes the Grecale SUV, available with petrol, hybrid and fully electric powertrains, alongside the GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible, both offered in combustion-engine and electric variants.
The range is complemented by the low-volume MCPura sports car and a selection of limited-edition derivatives.
Among the enhancements announced for the updated models are longer electric driving ranges and a revised six-cylinder engine producing 590 horsepower for the GranTurismo and GranCabrio.
Maserati also said all petrol-powered Grecale models will now be available with a six-cylinder engine.
Premium Positioning Remains Unchanged
The luxury brand continues to target the high-end segment, with entry prices starting at approximately €80,000 in Europe and around $80,000 in the United States.
Management is hoping that product improvements and future model launches will help strengthen Maserati’s position in the increasingly competitive luxury vehicle market.
Partnership Discussions Continue
Filosa revealed on Wednesday that Stellantis is evaluating strategic partnerships that could support Maserati’s future development.
According to the CEO, discussions are underway with “two important partners, which can bring us technology, development and excellent ideas”, with the company currently assessing its options.
Speaking during an online presentation of the updated vehicles, Maserati Chief Executive Santo Ficili suggested the company is seeking external expertise in selected technology areas.
“We clearly seek, want, and must find excellence on the market in electronic architecture, in the supply of specific parts…. we’re moving in that direction,” Ficili said.
However, he dismissed speculation surrounding potential collaborations with Jaguar Land Rover or Tata Motors, despite recent cooperation agreements between those groups and Stellantis in other markets.
Maserati Not for Sale
Despite ongoing challenges and recent reports suggesting interest from Chinese automaker BYD, Stellantis has ruled out any sale of the luxury brand.
“Maserati is not for sale, for sure,” Filosa said.
The marque delivered fewer than 8,000 vehicles last year and recorded an adjusted operating loss of €198 million, highlighting the scale of the turnaround challenge facing management.
