BYD poised to retake global EV sales crown from Tesla (TSLA)

Chinese automaker widens lead in second-quarter electric vehicle deliveries

BYD Co. (USOTC:BYDDY) is on track to regain its position as the world’s largest seller of fully electric vehicles, with second-quarter deliveries expected to outpace those of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA).

The Chinese manufacturer reported battery-electric vehicle (BEV) deliveries of 557,090 units during the second quarter, according to figures released on Wednesday.

Tesla is scheduled to publish its quarterly delivery figures next week, with analysts currently forecasting sales of approximately 396,500 vehicles.

BYD continues international expansion

BYD first overtook Tesla in the fourth quarter of 2024 and retained the global leadership position throughout 2025.

Tesla briefly reclaimed the top spot during the first quarter of 2026 after exceeding BYD’s BEV deliveries by roughly 48,000 vehicles, helped in part by softer demand in China’s domestic market.

Across all powertrain types and vehicle categories, BYD sold 403,472 vehicles in June, representing a 5.5% increase from a year earlier.

International markets accounted for 43% of total deliveries, highlighting the company’s growing presence outside China.

Technology investment remains a key priority

BYD continues to invest heavily in new technologies as competition intensifies across China’s electric vehicle industry.

The company is competing with domestic rivals including Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. and Xiaomi Corp., both of which are expanding their own electric vehicle offerings amid aggressive pricing across the sector.

In May, BYD unveiled several technology initiatives, including what it described as China’s most powerful chip for autonomous driving applications.

The automaker is also increasing production of its next-generation Blade battery technology as it looks to strengthen its competitive position.

Tesla works to strengthen its position in China

Meanwhile, Tesla has begun recruiting for driver-assistance technology roles in China following repeated delays to the rollout of advanced software features considered critical to competing with local manufacturers.

While global electric vehicle sales are expected to reach another record level this year, growth has begun to moderate in several key markets.

According to the China Passenger Car Association, sales of new energy vehicles—including battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models—declined 7.5% year over year in May.
