Walmart lowers prices on key summer food items
Walmart (NYSE:WMT) announced on Monday that it is reducing prices on a range of popular summer barbecue products, including beef, soft drinks and snack foods, after President Donald Trump said the retailer had agreed to lower prices at his administration’s request.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration’s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday. Walmart will, in particular, be dropping the price for a pound of ground beef by almost 15%.”
Walmart confirmed that the price of a one-pound roll of 73% lean ground beef would fall to US$5.94 from US$6.74, representing a reduction of about 12%. The retailer also announced lower prices on selected Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and snack products.
Consumers continue to face high food costs
The retailer’s decision comes as US consumers continue to grapple with elevated grocery prices, particularly for beef, while also facing higher fuel costs following the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran earlier this year.
Beef prices have remained near record levels after prolonged drought conditions reduced grazing land and increased feed costs, prompting many ranchers to shrink their cattle herds. Economists have warned that rebuilding US cattle inventories will likely take several years.
Commenting on Walmart’s announcement, Trump said: “This is a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.”
He also urged other retailers to follow suit, adding they “should follow the lead of these absolute Patriots.”
Walmart remains a key indicator of consumer spending
Because of its size and broad customer base, Walmart is widely regarded by economists as an important barometer of US consumer spending.
The retailer has recently attracted increasing numbers of middle- and higher-income shoppers searching for better value as persistent inflation continues to pressure household budgets.
The latest price reductions contrast with Walmart’s position last year, when the company warned that tariffs could force some prices higher, prompting criticism from Trump, who argued the retailer should absorb those additional costs rather than pass them on to customers.
Sam’s Club also joins price reductions
Alongside the changes at Walmart stores, the company said it is lowering prices on more than 250 products at its Sam’s Club warehouse chain.
Among the reductions, Member’s Mark 88/12 ground beef will be priced at US$5.97 per pound, down from US$6.17, representing a decrease of approximately 3%.
Beef supply challenges continue
The US beef market continues to face supply constraints following previous restrictions on cattle imports from Mexico, introduced after authorities identified the spread of the New World screwworm parasite.
The Trump administration has also encouraged imports of lower-tariff Argentine beef to ease domestic prices, while directing the Department of Justice to investigate whether major US meat processors had coordinated pricing practices.
