Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ:SPCX) has delayed the 13th test flight of its Starship launch system until Friday after unfavorable weather conditions prevented a planned Thursday liftoff from the company’s Starbase facility in Texas.
The postponement gives SpaceX another opportunity to conduct the mission under conditions that better support one of the flight’s primary engineering objectives.
Weather forces one-day delay
Announcing the change on X, the company said, “Now targeting Friday, July 24 for Starship’s thirteenth flight test, due to weather.”
SpaceX explained that clear atmospheric conditions are essential for collecting visual data during the mission.
According to the company, “a key objective for the flight test is to get clear imagery from the ground of Starship’s heatshield as it flies at a higher dynamic pressure during ascent, which won’t be possible with today’s weather conditions.” SpaceX added that visibility is expected to be much better for Friday’s launch window.
Flight 13 to support Starship development
The mission represents another milestone in the ongoing development of Starship, the company’s fully reusable launch system intended to support future Moon and Mars missions, as well as commercial satellite deployments.
Engineers are expected to evaluate a range of performance improvements as the programme moves closer to routine launch operations.
Building on the previous test mission
The upcoming flight follows Starship’s most recent test in May, when the Super Heavy booster was successfully recovered. During that mission, the upper-stage spacecraft completed much of its planned flight before losing attitude control during atmospheric re-entry.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration authorised Flight 13 to proceed after completing its review of the previous mission, allowing SpaceX to continue expanding its test campaign.
Reliability upgrades remain a priority
SpaceX has said the latest flight will incorporate a series of upgrades designed to improve the reliability of both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage.
The company continues to refine the launch system as it works toward increasing launch frequency and achieving fully reusable operations.
