IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) announced that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has generated $140 million in worldwide IMAX ticket sales, following a record-breaking second weekend that further strengthened the film’s performance in premium cinemas.
Distributed by Universal Pictures, the film delivered $48 million in global IMAX box office revenue during its second weekend, making it the highest-grossing second weekend ever recorded for an IMAX release. The result was down 8% from the $52 million generated during its opening weekend.
IMAX accounts for more than one-fifth of global ticket sales
Through its first two weekends, The Odyssey has earned $140 million through IMAX theatres, representing 21.9% of the film’s worldwide box office.
The company also noted that the movie surpassed $100 million in IMAX revenue in just 10 days, making it the second-fastest title in IMAX history to reach that milestone.
International markets deliver strong momentum
In North America, the film generated $24 million across 443 IMAX screens during its second weekend, a 19% decline from its debut while capturing a 27.7% share of the domestic box office.
Internationally, The Odyssey also earned $24 million from 450 IMAX screens, representing a 7% increase over its opening weekend and securing a 19% market share.
IMAX said the latest weekend marked its strongest-ever performance across the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
IMAX 70mm screenings remain in high demand
Premium IMAX 70mm Film presentations continue to attract strong audiences.
The format, currently available at 41 locations worldwide, generated $5.2 million during the second weekend, averaging approximately $126,000 per screen.
Cumulative IMAX 70mm revenue has reached $16.9 million, with an average of roughly $412,000 per location. The format now accounts for 12.1% of the film’s total IMAX global box office, while many additional showings remain sold out into September.
First feature filmed entirely with IMAX cameras
According to IMAX, The Odyssey is the first theatrical feature to be filmed entirely using IMAX Film Cameras.
Director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema reportedly used approximately 2.1 million feet of IMAX film during production. Each IMAX 70mm print measures around 11 miles in length and weighs close to 600 pounds.
The film’s international rollout will continue with IMAX releases scheduled for South Korea on August 5, China on August 14 and Japan on September 11.
As of June 30, 2026, IMAX operates 1,876 systems across 91 countries and territories.
