Chipotle Raises Full-Year Sales Outlook After Quarterly Earnings Beat

Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) reported second-quarter results that topped Wall Street expectations and lifted its full-year comparable sales forecast, supported by restaurant expansion and continued execution of its long-term growth strategy.

The stronger-than-expected performance sent the company’s shares up 5.1% in premarket trading on Thursday.

Revenue and Earnings Exceed Expectations

The Newport Beach, California-based restaurant chain posted adjusted earnings of $0.33 per share on revenue of $3.35 billion for the second quarter of 2026.

Analysts had been expecting earnings of $0.32 per share on revenue of $3.33 billion.

Comparable restaurant sales increased 2.2% during the quarter, driven by a 1.2% rise in average customer spending and a 1.0% increase in transaction volumes. Chipotle also expanded its footprint by opening 100 new restaurants during the period.

Digital Growth Supports Performance

Online orders continued to account for a growing share of the business, with digital sales representing 38.3% of food and beverage revenue, up from 35.5% in the same quarter last year.

At the same time, packaging expenses increased to 29.7% of total revenue from 28.9% a year earlier, reflecting higher beef and freight costs. Those pressures were partly offset by menu price increases, along with lower avocado and dairy costs.

Wolfe Research analysts, led by Greg Badishkanian, noted that “Chipotle’s 2Q comps beat expectations with positive transactions, though mgmt. flagged late July softening.”

Growth Strategy Continues to Gain Traction

Chipotle, whose menu features burritos, burrito bowls, tacos and salads, has been rolling out its “Recipe for Growth” strategy throughout the year. The initiative includes menu innovation, greater use of artificial intelligence across the business and a refreshed rewards programme designed to strengthen customer engagement.

“Our positive results reflect the momentum we’re building as our Recipe for Growth strategy continues to take shape,” chief executive Scott Boatwright said in a statement.

“We’re seeing encouraging progress because we’re focused on the right growth drivers—bringing meaningful menu innovation to our guests, deepening engagement through Chipotle Rewards, elevating hospitality in every restaurant, and expanding opportunities to serve more group occasions,” he added.
