IREN Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) shares gained 6% on Thursday morning after the company completed delivery of its Horizon 1 AI infrastructure deployment to Microsoft and secured NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status for its GB300 NVL72 installation. The milestones mark further progress in IREN’s large-scale AI Cloud expansion strategy and its five-year agreement with Microsoft.
IREN completes first Microsoft AI Cloud deployment
Horizon 1 is the first of four planned 50MW direct-to-chip liquid-cooled AI Cloud deployments that IREN expects to deliver to Microsoft during 2026.
The infrastructure is located at the company’s Childress, Texas campus and represents the initial phase of capacity being developed under IREN’s major cloud services agreement with Microsoft.
The five-year contract, announced in November 2025, has a total value of $9.7 billion and represents a significant component of IREN’s expansion into large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure.
“Delivering Horizon 1 demonstrates the strength of our vertically integrated model and our ability to execute complex AI infrastructure projects at speed and scale,” commented Daniel Roberts, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of IREN.
NVIDIA grants Exemplar Cloud status
IREN also announced that it had achieved NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status for the NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 deployment operating at Horizon 1.
The designation followed testing by NVIDIA and recognises IREN’s ability to provide infrastructure capable of supporting demanding artificial intelligence workloads with the required levels of performance, reliability and scalability.
Securing the status provides an additional validation of the technical capabilities of the Horizon 1 facility as IREN seeks to establish itself as a major provider of high-performance AI computing infrastructure.
Microsoft contract supports rapid capacity expansion
The Horizon programme represents a key part of IREN’s relationship with Microsoft and its broader strategy to increase AI Cloud capacity.
Each of the four planned Horizon deployments is expected to provide 50MW of direct-to-chip liquid-cooled infrastructure.
With Horizon 1 now delivered, IREN plans to complete Horizons 2, 3 and 4 later in 2026.
The deployments are designed to support increasingly power-intensive AI computing systems, with liquid cooling becoming particularly important as next-generation accelerators generate greater heat density.
IREN targets 480MW of AI Cloud capacity in 2026
Beyond the Microsoft programme, IREN continues to pursue a substantial expansion of its overall AI infrastructure platform.
The company is targeting 480MW of AI Cloud capacity during 2026 before increasing that figure to 1.2GW in 2027.
Achieving those targets would represent a significant increase in the scale of IREN’s operations as demand for computing capacity continues to grow alongside investment in artificial intelligence models and applications.
The expansion strategy also demonstrates the company’s increasing focus on AI Cloud services alongside its existing digital infrastructure activities.
More than 3,000 workers contributed to Horizon 1
Roberts said more than 3,000 people across the site team contributed to delivering Horizon 1, illustrating the scale of construction and technical work involved in bringing the facility online.
IREN’s vertically integrated operating model gives the company control over several stages of infrastructure development, potentially helping it accelerate construction and deployment as customers demand increasingly large amounts of computing capacity.
The successful completion of Horizon 1 provides an initial demonstration of that model under the Microsoft contract.
Investors focus on next Horizon deployments
The 6% rise in IREN shares reflects investor optimism surrounding both the completion of Horizon 1 and the NVIDIA recognition.
Attention will now turn to the planned delivery of Horizons 2 through 4 later this year and IREN’s ability to reach its broader target of 480MW of AI Cloud capacity during 2026.
With the $9.7 billion Microsoft agreement providing substantial contracted demand and NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud status validating the Horizon 1 deployment, execution of the remaining capacity programme will be an important factor for IREN (NASDAQ:IREN) as it works towards its 1.2GW target for 2027.
