GE Vernova secures Stage 3 contract for Queensland Supernode battery project

GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) has been selected by Quinbrook to provide technology for the third stage of the Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) development in Queensland, Australia, further extending its involvement in the large-scale energy storage project.

Under the latest contract, GE Vernova will supply power conversion technology, plant controls, system integration services and grid-connection support. The company’s technology is now being deployed across all three stages of Supernode, with the first two phases already operational.

Stage 3 to add more than 1,200 MWh of storage capacity

The third stage of the development will provide an additional 260 MW of power and 1,216 MWh of four-hour battery storage capacity.

Once Stage 3 is completed, the entire Supernode facility is expected to have capacity of 780 MW and 3,075 MWh, making it a significant energy storage asset within Queensland’s electricity network.

The latest phase has also secured Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance, an important grid-connection milestone that establishes the technical performance requirements governing the project’s participation in Australia’s National Electricity Market.

GE Vernova expands role across Supernode development

“Supernode shows what is possible when storage, power conversion and intelligent controls work together at scale,” said Ed Torres, Business Leader Power Conversion & Storage at GE Vernova’s Electrification segment.

GE Vernova’s involvement across all three stages provides the project with a common technology platform covering power conversion, controls and integration as capacity expands.

The Supernode facility is strategically located within Queensland’s electricity transmission network, allowing its batteries to absorb power during periods of abundant supply and discharge electricity when demand rises.

Quinbrook sees potential for another 520 MW of capacity

The site could ultimately grow beyond the three currently planned stages.

James Allan, Senior Director at Quinbrook, said Supernode has room for a further 520 MW of development. Future capacity could be used for additional battery storage, data centres or a combination of the two.

The Stage 3 award therefore strengthens GE Vernova’s position within a project that still has substantial scope for expansion as demand for grid-scale storage and power-intensive infrastructure increases in Australia.
