Stoke Therapeutics shares rise as JPMorgan starts coverage with Overweight rating

Stoke Therapeutics (NASDAQ:STOK) shares gained 1.4% in pre-market trading after JPMorgan initiated coverage of the biotechnology company with an Overweight rating and a $40 price target, adding another positive Wall Street view to the outlook for the RNA-focused drug developer.

The initiation strengthens an already bullish analyst consensus around Stoke, with 14 analysts now carrying positive ratings on the company and no hold or sell recommendations currently recorded.

JPMorgan’s coverage follows several other favourable calls from major investment firms.

Goldman Sachs previously began coverage with a Buy rating and a $44 price target, while Guggenheim maintained its Buy recommendation alongside a $60 target. Wedbush also increased its target to $40 and retained an Outperform rating following Stoke’s second-quarter results.

The latest initiation therefore adds to expectations that the company’s clinical pipeline could provide meaningful long-term growth opportunities, although future performance remains heavily dependent on successful drug development and regulatory progress.

Stoke shares were trading at $31.85 before the opening bell, approximately 21% below their 52-week high of $40.22.

Stoke expands workforce as development programme advances

Separately, Stoke announced on August 18 that it had awarded inducement stock options to seven newly recruited employees.

The grants come as the company continues building its organisation while progressing its clinical programmes and preparing for the possibility of future commercialisation.

Stoke is developing RNA medicines designed to address the underlying causes of severe diseases by restoring protein expression.

Phase 3 Dravet syndrome study completes enrolment

A major focus for investors remains zorevunersen, Stoke’s investigational treatment for Dravet syndrome.

The company recently completed enrolment of 162 patients in its Phase 3 EMPEROR study, which is evaluating zorevunersen as a potential disease-modifying therapy for the rare and severe form of epilepsy.

Progress in the late-stage programme represents an important clinical milestone for Stoke, with future study results likely to play a significant role in determining the company’s valuation and commercial prospects.

Stoke has also indicated that its existing financial resources should provide a cash runway through early 2028, giving the company funding to continue advancing its development programmes.

Positive US markets provide supportive backdrop

Stoke’s pre-market gain came alongside broadly positive trading across US equity futures. The S&P 500 was up 0.3%, the Dow Jones gained 0.4% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.5%.

The combination of JPMorgan’s new Overweight rating, consistently positive analyst sentiment and progress with the EMPEROR trial helped support Stoke shares ahead of the opening bell.

With the stock still trading below its 52-week peak, investor attention is likely to remain centred on upcoming clinical milestones for zorevunersen and whether the company can translate its late-stage development progress into a potential commercial opportunity.
