Canaan Q2 Revenue Falls 68% as Net Loss Widens to $97.6 Million

Canaan’s quarterly results show sharply weaker mining-equipment demand and substantial accounting charges, while its bitcoin treasury reached a record level and the company accelerated share repurchases.

Key Investor Takeaways

  • Canaan (NASDAQ:CAN) reported second-quarter revenue of $31.9 million, down from $100.2 million a year earlier and $62.7 million in the first quarter.
  • The Canaan Q2 revenue decline coincided with a widening net loss of $97.6 million, compared with $11.1 million in the year-ago period.
  • The company mined 243 bitcoins during the quarter and ended June with a record cryptocurrency treasury of 1,915.5 BTC and 3,951.7 ETH.
  • Results included a $25.3 million inventory and related write-down and provision, a $9.2 million property and equipment impairment, and losses tied to cryptocurrency and financial derivative fair-value changes.
  • Canaan expects third-quarter revenue of just $11 million to $15 million, while it has repurchased approximately 16.4 million ADSs for $7.4 million under its current buyback programme as of September 8.

Why CAN Stock Is in Focus

Canaan’s Q2 revenue decline reflects a difficult operating environment across both its mining-equipment and bitcoin-mining businesses.

Product revenue dropped to $13.6 million from $71.9 million a year earlier as computing power sold and average selling prices declined amid weaker market demand. Mining revenue decreased to $17.7 million from $28.1 million, primarily because of a lower average bitcoin price.

The resulting financial pressure was significant. Canaan recorded a $29.3 million gross loss and a $69.5 million operating loss, while its net loss expanded to $97.6 million. Adjusted EBITDA was negative $74.9 million versus positive $25.3 million a year earlier.

Several non-cash items contributed to the bottom-line deterioration. These included $25.3 million of inventory and related write-downs and provisions, a $9.2 million impairment of property and equipment, a $9.3 million cryptocurrency fair-value loss and an $8.9 million loss from changes in the fair value of financial derivatives.

Why This Matters for Investors

The results highlight a contrast between Canaan’s expanding cryptocurrency holdings and weakening near-term financial performance.

Its treasury reached 1,915.5 BTC and 3,951.7 ETH at the end of June, while non-joint-venture installed mining computing power increased 23.3% year over year to 10.05 EH/s. The company also reported an all-in mining power cost of approximately $0.043 per kWh.

Canaan is now using its digital assets more actively as part of its capital-allocation strategy. In late August, it sold 3,952 ETH and 54 bitcoins for approximately $13.9 million, with some of those proceeds funding share repurchases.

By September 8, Canaan had bought back approximately 16.4 million ADSs for $7.4 million under its existing programme. Management said the digital-asset sales do not represent a change in its longer-term treasury strategy.

The company’s balance-sheet liquidity will also remain relevant after cash declined to $66.0 million at June 30 from $80.8 million at the end of 2025. Canaan said it intends to maintain disciplined inventory levels and preserve financial flexibility while directing resources toward power capacity for its compute-and-energy infrastructure strategy.

What to Watch Next

Canaan’s third-quarter outlook points to continued near-term pressure, with expected revenue of $11 million to $15 million, substantially below the $31.9 million generated in Q2.

Investors can also watch the pace of further share repurchases, digital-asset treasury changes and progress securing lower-cost power capacity.

Operationally, the Project ABC fleet upgrade is another development to monitor after installed hashrate reached 4.85 EH/s by the end of July. Canaan is also preparing new Avalon Home products for mass production ahead of the winter heating season and continuing work on longer-term North American power resources.
