US consumer prices increased in line with economists’ expectations in August, while monthly core inflation came in slightly above forecasts, according to data released Friday by the Labor Department.
The consumer price index rose 0.4% month on month in August, following a 0.1% increase in July.
Excluding food and energy, core consumer prices increased 0.3% in August after rising 0.2% in July. Economists had expected the core index to increase by another 0.2%.
On an annual basis, headline consumer price inflation remained unchanged at 3.4% in August.
Annual core inflation eased to 2.4% from 2.5% in July, matching economists’ expectations.
