Wolfspeed Shares Jump 16% After Securing Conditional $1.5 Billion US Defence Loan Commitment

Wolfspeed (NYSE:WOLF) shares surged 16.0% in pre-market trading on Thursday after the silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturer announced a conditional financing commitment of up to $1.5 billion from the US Department of War to support domestic production and technology development for national security applications.

The announcement, released after Wednesday’s market close, outlined a proposed long-term financing arrangement through the department’s Office of Strategic Capital. The funding would support the development and manufacturing of silicon carbide materials and wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices in the United States.

The proposed facility has a 30-year term and is structured as a senior secured delayed-draw loan. Completion remains subject to due diligence, final financing agreements and the necessary regulatory and administrative approvals.

Wolfspeed plans to use the funding to expand its gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxy capabilities, supporting the development of advanced communications infrastructure and electronic warfare technologies.

The company also intends to strengthen radiation-hardening capabilities across its silicon carbide (SiC) and GaN product portfolios, potentially expanding their use in defence systems and commercial applications requiring high-performance semiconductor technology.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Feurle highlighted the importance of the company’s technologies to US defence capabilities, stating that “SiC and GaN have critical national security applications.”

As part of the proposed financing arrangement, Wolfspeed will issue warrants to the US Department of War that could allow the government to acquire up to 7.5% of the company’s shares through a series of tranches.

The potential government investment represents a significant development for Wolfspeed as it seeks to strengthen its domestic manufacturing capabilities and expand its position in semiconductor technologies used in strategically important industries.

The company’s share price gains may also have been amplified by its historically elevated short interest. Stocks with substantial short positions can experience sharp increases when positive developments prompt investors betting against the shares to close their positions.

Wolfspeed’s rally contrasted with broader weakness in US equity markets. The S&P 500 was down 0.3%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.6%, and the Nasdaq fell 0.5%.

Investor sentiment across the wider market remained cautious after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting indicated that policymakers expected at least one additional interest rate increase before the end of 2026.

Despite the weaker market backdrop, Wolfspeed shares advanced to $36.39 in pre-market trading, considerably above their 52-week low of $13.48.

The proposed financing package, combined with plans to expand into defence-related semiconductor applications, has prompted renewed investor interest in the company’s longer-term growth prospects.

Attention will now turn to the completion of the financing arrangements and Wolfspeed’s next earnings report, expected later this month, for further indications of its operational performance and investment requirements.
