Nasdaq sign on a tall building

Wall Street Futures Flat as Investors Await US Inflation Data and Major Bank Earnings: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq

US stock futures pointed to a broadly unchanged opening on Monday, suggesting a cautious start to trading as investors prepared for important inflation figures and the beginning of a busy corporate earnings period.

The subdued outlook followed Friday’s recovery on Wall Street, when the major indices advanced after experiencing selling pressure during the previous session.

Market participants are expected to remain cautious ahead of Wednesday’s US consumer price inflation report, which could influence expectations for Federal Reserve monetary policy.

Economists expect annual consumer price inflation to accelerate to 3.6% in September, compared with 3.4% in August, potentially reinforcing concerns about persistent price pressures.

The data will be closely monitored following the Federal Reserve’s quarter-point interest rate increase last month.

According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, financial markets currently assign an 80.6% probability to the central bank leaving interest rates unchanged at its next policy meeting.

A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could affect those expectations, particularly if it suggests that price pressures remain elevated despite tighter monetary conditions.

Corporate earnings will also be a major focus this week, with several of the largest US banks scheduled to publish their quarterly financial results.

Citigroup (NYSE:C), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) and Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) are among the financial institutions expected to report.

Investors will assess their earnings performance and forward guidance for indications of lending activity, credit conditions, consumer spending and the broader economic outlook.

The results could help determine market direction as the quarterly earnings season gains momentum.

Wall Street Rebounds Following Thursday’s Declines

US equities recovered on Friday, with all three major benchmarks closing higher after the weakness recorded during Thursday’s session.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 423.31 points, or 0.8%, to finish at 51,654.95.

The Nasdaq Composite advanced 172.83 points, or 0.6%, to 27,366.17, while the S&P 500 increased 46.18 points, also equivalent to 0.6%, closing at 7,811.54.

The gains contributed to a positive weekly performance across the major indices.

For the week, the S&P 500 rose 1.2%, the Dow advanced 0.9% and the Nasdaq gained 0.6%.

The recovery was supported partly by continued investor interest in artificial intelligence-related companies, despite reports suggesting that OpenAI’s annualised revenue was below some market estimates.

CNBC reported that, according to a person familiar with the matter, a higher revenue figure widely circulated late last month included gross revenue generated through OpenAI’s partners.

The clarification attracted attention to the financial performance of AI businesses, although investor optimism surrounding the sector continued to support technology shares.

Expectations of strong corporate earnings may also have encouraged buying ahead of the upcoming reporting period.

Gold, Technology and Healthcare Stocks Lead Gains

Sector performance on Friday showed broad strength across several areas of the US equity market.

Gold mining shares recorded substantial gains alongside higher precious metal prices, pushing the NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index up 2.9%.

The advance extended the index’s recovery from a two-month closing low reached on Wednesday.

Software and networking companies also performed strongly, with the Dow Jones U.S. Software Index and the NYSE Arca Networking Index each climbing 2.7%.

Biotechnology, healthcare and commercial real estate stocks registered notable advances, contributing to the broader market rebound.

However, telecommunications shares moved sharply lower following developments in the satellite communications industry.

The NYSE Arca North American Telecom Index declined 4% after SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) announced an agreement to acquire a nationwide portfolio of low-band spectrum licences.

The announcement raised concerns about increased competition in the telecommunications market, weighing on shares across the sector.

Looking ahead, trading conditions could remain uneven as investors assess inflation risks, the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates and the first major corporate earnings announcements of the week.
