Ed Yardeni Sees Buying Opportunities Ahead Despite S&P 500 Valuation Concerns

Ed Yardeni, President and Chief Investment Strategist at Yardeni Research, believes further market volatility could create attractive opportunities for equity investors, even as elevated valuations remain a concern.

The firm continues to maintain a positive outlook for corporate earnings and economic growth but has adjusted its S&P 500 forecasts to reflect the risk of lower valuation multiples.

On September 15, Yardeni Research postponed its 8,400-point S&P 500 target until mid-2027 and introduced a year-end 2026 target of 7,900. It also reduced its year-end forward price-to-earnings forecast to 18.6 from 19.8, while maintaining its 2027 earnings projection of $425 per share.

Market Corrections Could Create Buying Opportunities

Yardeni believes the fundamental outlook for US equities remains supportive, despite several potential sources of market disruption.

“Since we continue to see strong fundamental underpinnings supporting the stock market, any coming scares could present buying opportunities rather than reason to lighten stock positions,” wrote Yardeni.

The strategist identified four areas that could trigger additional volatility: geopolitical tensions, Federal Reserve policy, US midterm elections and artificial intelligence investment.

Geopolitical Risks and Federal Reserve Policy

Yardeni warned that tensions in the Middle East could intensify, particularly following the November 3 US midterm elections.

“The good news is that geopolitical crises historically have created buying opportunities unless they cause recessions,” he said.

Monetary policy represents another potential source of market uncertainty.

Yardeni believes investors may be underestimating the possibility of a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve interest rate increase at this week’s meeting or a larger 50-basis-point increase in December.

Any resulting equity market decline could provide another opportunity to increase exposure, according to the firm.

Midterm Elections Could Add Political Uncertainty

Yardeni also highlighted the possibility of a Democratic sweep of Congress, an outcome increasingly anticipated by betting markets.

The firm suggested that equity investors may not have fully incorporated this scenario into current valuations.

Potential consequences include greater political scrutiny of data centre development and another confrontation over the federal debt ceiling in 2027.

AI Investment Remains Strong Despite Growing Constraints

Artificial intelligence represents the fourth potential source of market volatility.

Yardeni identified financial, physical and political limitations on AI development but argued that these constraints could support the industry’s longer-term sustainability.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), Meta (NASDAQ:META), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Oracle (NYSE:ORCL) are projected to invest nearly $780 billion in 2026, with combined annual spending expected to exceed $1 trillion between 2027 and 2030.

“Further AI jitters therefore could set up buying opportunities rather than signal the end of the boom,” Yardeni added.

Despite the possibility of further market setbacks, Yardeni Research continues to view earnings growth and economic fundamentals as supportive of equities, suggesting that temporary declines may offer opportunities for investors rather than signalling a sustained downturn.
