Gold Falls Below $3,950 as Precious Metals Weaken Ahead of US Midterm Elections

Gold prices declined on Tuesday as renewed selling across precious metals erased part of the previous session’s recovery, while investors assessed developments in US-Iran peace negotiations, inflation expectations and the upcoming US midterm elections.

Spot gold fell 0.7% to $3,920.44 per ounce at 00:55 ET (05:55 GMT), while US gold futures declined 1% to $3,929.67 per ounce. The retreat followed a 1.9% gain on Monday, when signs of diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran had supported bullion.

The broader precious metals market also weakened, reflecting continued selling pressure following October’s sharp decline in gold prices and recent volatility in technology stocks.

Precious Metals Decline as Gold Gives Back Earlier Gains

Gold slipped below $3,950 per ounce as investors reduced exposure to precious metals following Monday’s recovery.

Silver recorded a larger decline, falling 2.8% to $49.2455 per ounce, while platinum dropped 1% to $1,432.32.

Spot palladium lost 1.6% to $952.15 per ounce, while palladium futures declined 1.9% to $944.00.

Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index edged down 0.1% to 101.75.

The modest weakening of the dollar provided little support for bullion, suggesting that broader selling pressure and uncertainty surrounding financial markets continued to influence prices.

Gold’s latest decline followed a difficult October, when the metal lost 6.8% and fell below the psychologically important $4,000-per-ounce level.

Prices subsequently reached a one-year low, increasing concerns about the durability of any near-term recovery.

US-Iran Peace Talks Influence Gold and Oil Markets

Diplomatic developments involving the United States and Iran have become an important influence on precious metals and energy prices.

Gold rose 1.9% on Monday after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his government had received greater authority from the country’s supreme leader to pursue peace negotiations.

US President Donald Trump also indicated that discussions were making progress, encouraging expectations that the conflict could move towards a diplomatic settlement.

The developments contributed to a decline of more than 7% in Brent crude prices on Monday, before oil markets stabilised on Tuesday.

Lower energy prices have helped ease concerns about further increases in inflation, potentially reducing pressure on central banks to tighten monetary policy.

However, renewed military activity in the Middle East remains a risk, and expectations of diplomatic progress could change quickly if hostilities intensify.

Lower Oil Prices Could Ease Interest Rate Pressures

The conflict between the United States and Iran, which the report describes as having lasted nine months, has contributed to higher energy prices and increased inflationary pressures.

Rising fuel and transportation costs can affect consumer prices and business expenses, complicating central banks’ efforts to control inflation.

Persistently high inflation can increase expectations of higher interest rates or delay anticipated reductions in borrowing costs.

Such conditions typically weigh on gold because the metal does not generate interest income, making interest-bearing assets relatively more attractive.

The recent decline in oil prices has temporarily reduced concerns about additional monetary tightening.

Nevertheless, the relationship between energy prices, inflation and interest rate expectations remains an important consideration for investors assessing gold’s outlook.

Technology Stock Sell-Off Adds Pressure to Bullion

Gold has also faced selling pressure linked to volatility in global equity markets.

Last week’s decline in artificial intelligence-related stocks prompted some investors to liquidate gold holdings to cover losses in other assets.

The selling contributed to bullion’s weakness despite its traditional reputation as a defensive investment during periods of market uncertainty.

Technology shares remained under pressure on Tuesday, with further losses in Asian markets following a deeper sell-off among US semiconductor companies.

Continued weakness in technology stocks could therefore leave gold vulnerable to additional liquidation as investors adjust portfolios and manage their exposure to market volatility.

The developments highlight how gold can experience short-term declines during broader market sell-offs, particularly when investors need to raise cash.

US Midterm Elections Could Trigger Fresh Gold Price Volatility

Investors are also preparing for the US midterm elections, with results potentially influencing precious metals trading during Wednesday’s Asian session.

Changes in the political balance in Washington could affect expectations surrounding US economic policy, government spending and inflation.

Market participants are particularly focused on whether the election outcome could renew attention on the country’s fiscal deficits and the longer-term outlook for price pressures.

Greater concern about inflation, public finances or geopolitical uncertainty could increase demand for gold as a defensive asset.

However, the market response will depend on the election results and how investors interpret their implications for monetary and fiscal policy.

Oversold Conditions and Chinese Demand Offer Support

Despite the recent decline, some indicators suggest that gold could be approaching conditions supportive of a recovery.

A measure of the metal’s relative strength moved into oversold territory last week, indicating that selling may have become extended.

Although oversold technical readings do not guarantee a rebound, they can suggest that downward momentum may be weakening.

Physical demand has also provided support.

According to ANZ, Chinese households have increased gold purchases during the recent decline in prices, taking advantage of lower valuations.

This buying interest could help cushion further losses, particularly if financial market selling pressure begins to ease.

However, physical demand and technical signals will need to compete with broader macroeconomic developments and investor positioning.

Gold Market Outlook

Gold remains exposed to several competing influences as investors assess geopolitical developments, monetary policy expectations and financial market volatility.

The prospect of progress in US-Iran peace negotiations has reduced some concerns about energy-driven inflation, while the recent sell-off in technology stocks has created additional pressure on bullion.

The US midterm elections could provide another source of volatility, particularly if the results shift expectations for inflation, fiscal policy or economic uncertainty.

Oversold technical conditions and increased physical buying from Chinese households may offer support, but renewed conflict in the Middle East or further equity market weakness could complicate any recovery.

Investors will continue monitoring gold’s position below $4,000 per ounce, developments in energy markets and the political outlook in Washington for indications of its next direction.
