Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST) shares gained approximately 5% in premarket trading after the power generation company reported strong third-quarter 2026 profit growth and raised its full-year earnings guidance, despite revenue falling short of Wall Street expectations.
Quarterly revenue increased 28% year over year to $6.35 billion, compared with $4.97 billion in the third quarter of 2025. However, the figure was below analysts’ consensus estimate of $6.79 billion.
Vistra reported net income of $1.14 billion, while Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA reached $2.38 billion, representing growth of more than 50% compared with the prior-year period.
Strong Power Generation Performance Drives Earnings Growth
Vistra’s third-quarter performance benefited from reliable electricity generation operations and its ability to meet customer demand during one of the hottest third quarters on record.
The company’s generation fleet maintained operations through elevated temperatures, while its retail electricity business continued serving customers.
President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Burke highlighted the contribution of both divisions to the company’s financial performance.
“During one of the hottest third quarters on record, our generation team maintained safe and reliable operations, while our retail business continued meeting customer needs,” Burke said.
“These efforts are reflected in our financial performance, with Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA increasing more than 50% from the previous year.”
The substantial increase in adjusted EBITDA demonstrated stronger profitability despite revenue coming in below market expectations.
Vistra Raises and Narrows 2026 Earnings Guidance
Following the quarterly results, Vistra increased and narrowed its full-year 2026 Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA guidance to between $7.1 billion and $7.5 billion.
The midpoint of the revised range, $7.3 billion, represents an increase from the company’s previous outlook.
Vistra also expects Ongoing Operations Adjusted Free Cash Flow before Growth (FCFbG) of $4.3 billion to $4.7 billion for 2026.
The updated guidance reflects management’s expectations for continued operating performance and cash generation through the remainder of the year.
Company Forecasts Up to $8.5 Billion in Adjusted EBITDA for 2027
Vistra also introduced its financial outlook for fiscal 2027, forecasting Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA between $7.7 billion and $8.5 billion.
The midpoint of $8.1 billion represents an increase of approximately 11% compared with the midpoint of its revised 2026 guidance.
For 2027, the company expects Ongoing Operations Adjusted FCFbG of $4.3 billion to $5.1 billion.
The projections indicate expectations for further earnings growth and substantial cash generation across Vistra’s electricity generation and retail operations.
Investors Respond to Higher Profitability and Improved Outlook
Vistra’s approximately 5% premarket share price increase reflected a positive investor response to its strong earnings growth and improved financial guidance.
Although quarterly revenue missed analyst forecasts, the company’s more than 50% increase in Ongoing Operations Adjusted EBITDA and higher 2026 outlook provided encouraging indicators.
The introduction of 2027 guidance, including an adjusted EBITDA midpoint of $8.1 billion, also highlighted management’s expectations for continued growth.
Investors will monitor Vistra’s ability to maintain reliable generation operations, manage electricity market conditions and deliver its projected earnings and free cash flow.
