Yardeni Research Warns AI Earnings Expectations Are Reaching Unsustainable Levels

Yardeni Research has warned that increasingly ambitious earnings forecasts for artificial intelligence-related companies are making investors less tolerant of disappointing results, even as enthusiasm surrounding AI continues to support long-term profit expectations.

In a research note, the firm highlighted the widening gap between analysts’ projections for corporate earnings growth and investors’ willingness to pay higher valuations.

“In our view, industry analysts are projecting such extraordinary earnings growth that it’s becoming hard to believe and leaves little room for disappointment,” Yardeni Research stated.

S&P 500 Earnings Forecasts Reach Record Levels

Consensus operating earnings per share estimates for the S&P 500 have increased to $366 for 2026, $425 for 2027 and $494 for 2028.

Yardeni’s own projections stand at $375, $425 and $450, respectively, indicating greater caution about earnings growth toward the end of the forecast period.

Meanwhile, analysts’ average five-year long-term earnings growth expectation has climbed to a record 25.6%.

Much of this optimism is concentrated in technology companies benefiting from the expansion of artificial intelligence.

Long-term earnings growth expectations for the information technology sector have reached 41.9%, while semiconductor companies face even more demanding projections of 66%.

Lower Valuations Signal Growing Investor Caution

Despite rising earnings expectations, the S&P 500’s forward price-to-earnings ratio has declined to 18.5 from more than 22 earlier this year.

Yardeni suggested that the divergence indicates investors are increasingly reluctant to assign premium valuations to companies based on exceptionally optimistic profit forecasts.

“The result is an extraordinarily high bar for corporate earnings and a market quick to punish disappointment,” the firm explained.

Consequently, even companies reporting solid financial results may face selling pressure if their performance fails to match elevated market expectations.

Investor Skepticism Could Help Prevent an AI Bubble

Although the market’s reaction to earnings has become more severe, Yardeni believes the increased scrutiny could help limit excessive speculation in artificial intelligence investments.

The firm identified financial discipline, political restrictions, social concerns and physical infrastructure constraints as factors that could prevent unchecked expansion.

“There are simply too many guardrails in place to allow the AI boom to run completely unchecked,” Yardeni stated.

These limitations could encourage investors to focus more closely on profitability and the financial returns generated by substantial AI-related spending.

Strong Economic Growth Complicates Federal Reserve Outlook

Yardeni also highlighted resilient US economic activity, with real gross domestic product expanding at an annualised rate of 3.4% during the third quarter.

However, inflation remains elevated, with the core personal consumption expenditures price index increasing 3.1% year over year.

The firm continues to believe the Federal Reserve should return monetary policy to a neutral setting, which it estimates at an interest rate range of 4.25% to 4.50%.

The combination of strong economic growth, persistent inflation and demanding corporate earnings expectations presents a challenging environment for equity valuations.

Yardeni’s analysis suggests that the AI investment boom may continue, but companies will face increasing pressure to demonstrate that their earnings can justify the market’s ambitious growth forecasts.
