QuantumScape (NYSE:QS) stock surged 19% after the company, alongside PowerCo—the battery division of Volkswagen Group—showcased the world’s first real-time demonstration of solid-state lithium-metal batteries powering an electric vehicle at IAA Mobility in Munich.
The event featured a modified Ducati V21L racing motorcycle outfitted with QSE-5 battery cells manufactured via QuantumScape’s Cobra production process. This demonstration represents a major milestone as the first anode-free solid-state batteries to move from lab testing to a practical vehicle application.
The technology reportedly delivers notable performance metrics, including an energy density of 844 Wh/L, fast charging from 10% to 80% in just over 12 minutes, and continuous 10C discharge capability. These figures address critical industry requirements for higher energy density, rapid charging, safety, longevity, and cost efficiency.
“Today we’ve crossed the threshold from possibility to reality,” said Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and president of QuantumScape. “We believe that our partnership with PowerCo, together with Ducati as our demonstration launch partner, positions us to scale our transformative technology to gigawatt-hour production.”
This demonstration follows QuantumScape’s June implementation of its proprietary Cobra separator process into standard production. QuantumScape and PowerCo also recently expanded their strategic partnership, which includes up to $131 million in milestone-based payments over the next two years to increase manufacturing scale and enable higher-volume prototype cell deliveries.
