Beam Global (NASDAQ:BEEM) shares jumped 8.5% on Tuesday following news that the company secured a patent for its Intelligent Battery Thermal Management (iBTM) system, designed to enable rapid charging of lithium-ion batteries in extremely cold conditions.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded Patent No. US 12,431,549 for Beam’s technology, which combines a heating element with the company’s proprietary Phase Change Composite material to regulate battery temperatures. Unlike conventional approaches relying on complex active cooling, Beam’s system dynamically controls charging rates while monitoring battery health.
“We continue to create new technology and intellectual property, which increases the value we deliver to the industry while also increasing barrier to entry for the competition,” said Desmond Wheatley, CEO of Beam Global.
The iBTM system can precondition batteries for fast charging even in ultra-low temperatures, with initial simulations indicating a 10°C rise in less than three minutes. This capability opens up new possibilities for Beam’s energy storage solutions, particularly in cold climates where traditional fast charging is limited.
Beam’s technology operates by continuously tracking battery conditions and integrating with smart battery management systems to prevent degradation reactions that normally occur during rapid charging at low temperatures. The company emphasizes that the innovation enhances safety, extends battery cycle life, and offers a scalable solution for electric mobility, defense, and energy storage applications.
Beam Global focuses on sustainable infrastructure solutions supporting transportation electrification and energy security.
