IBM Shares Climb After Announcing Strategic AI Partnership with Anthropic

IBM (NYSE:IBM) shares surged nearly 7% in pre-market trading on Tuesday after the tech giant unveiled a strategic collaboration with Anthropic to integrate its Claude AI model into IBM’s software ecosystem.

The partnership will kick off with the integration of Claude into IBM’s new AI-first Integrated Development Environment (IDE), which is currently in private preview for select enterprise clients. According to IBM, more than 6,000 early adopters within the company are already using the IDE, achieving average productivity gains of around 45%.

The new IDE is tailored for enterprise software development, supporting the full application lifecycle — from modernization and code generation to review, orchestration, and security-focused development.

As part of the collaboration, IBM developed — and Anthropic independently verified — a technical guide titled “Architecting Secure Enterprise AI Agents with MCP”, which outlines best practices for designing and managing AI agents within enterprise environments.
