Shares of Momentus Inc. (NASDAQ:MNTS) climbed 10.6% in premarket trading on Thursday after the commercial space transportation company announced it had secured a $5.1 million contract from NASA under its Flight Opportunities program.
The contract, awarded on September 26, will support the Commercial Orbital System for Microgravity In-Space Crystallization (COSMIC) demonstration. Momentus will use its Vigoride orbital service vehicle to host COSMIC payloads designed to advance crystal growth technologies used in pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and advanced materials by leveraging the unique conditions of microgravity.
“Momentus is proud to support NASA and the COSMIC mission with our versatile Vigoride platform,” said John Rood, CEO of Momentus. “We’re excited to play a key role in this flight test that seeks to unlock new frontiers in space-based manufacturing and usher in a new era where microgravity becomes a driver of innovation and economic growth.”
The COSMIC mission is a collaborative project between SpaceWorks Enterprises and Astral Materials, and was selected as a winner of NASA TechLeap Prize Space Technology Payload Challenge in June 2025. Once deployed in orbit, the payload will showcase novel semiconductor manufacturing techniques.
This award comes shortly after NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center granted Momentus a $2.5 million contract to conduct an in-space demonstration of a Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine (RDRE) thruster. According to the company, this is the sixth NASA contract Momentus has secured in recent months, reinforcing its growing role in space innovation.
