Rivian Recalls Nearly 35,000 U.S. Vehicles Over Faulty Seat Belt Pretension Cable

Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) is recalling 34,824 vehicles across the United States after discovering a defect in the driver’s seat belt pretension cable that could prevent the restraint system from functioning properly during a crash, increasing the likelihood of injury.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Wednesday, noting that the issue affects select 2022–2025 EDV models.

According to the agency, Rivian has already deployed an over-the-air software update aimed at mitigating the problem. The automaker will also conduct inspections and replace the driver’s seat belt pretension assembly where needed.

The pretension cable plays a vital role in occupant protection, tightening the seat belt in the instant a collision occurs to help secure the driver more effectively.
