Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) is holding discussions with Samsung Electronics (USOTC:SSNHZ) over potential contract manufacturing of advanced two-nanometre chips, according to comments from chief executive Cristiano Amon cited by South Korea’s Korea Economic Daily on Wednesday.
The newspaper reported that Amon said Qualcomm has begun talks with Samsung Electronics ahead of other semiconductor foundry players regarding the use of cutting-edge two-nanometre process technology. He added that the chip designs are already complete, positioning the products for commercial rollout in the near term.
Qualcomm did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside of normal business hours, while Samsung Electronics said it does not comment on individual customer relationships.
The report follows recent remarks from Samsung Electronics’ co-CEO and head of its chip division, Jun Young-hyun, who said last week that fresh supply agreements with major customers had left the company’s loss-making foundry unit “primed for a great leap forward”. In July, Samsung also announced a $16.5 billion contract manufacturing deal with Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), underscoring its push to expand its foundry business.
