Meta Weighs Major Expansion of Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Output, Bloomberg Reports

Meta (NASDAQ:META) and EssilorLuxottica (EU:EL) are exploring a significant increase in production of their AI-enabled smart glasses, with discussions centered on potentially doubling annual capacity to around 20 million units by the end of this year, according to a Bloomberg News report published Tuesday.

The report, citing sources familiar with the talks, said strong demand could even justify pushing output beyond 30 million units annually if market conditions remain favorable. However, no final decision has been made, Bloomberg noted.

Reuters said it was unable to independently confirm the report. EssilorLuxottica declined to comment when contacted by Reuters, while Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bloomberg added that EssilorLuxottica, which owns the Ray-Ban brand and manufactures the smart glasses in partnership with Meta, is already close to meeting its existing production goal of 10 million units by late 2026. The eyewear group said in October that it planned to speed up capacity expansion for its fast-growing smart glasses business.

Meta and EssilorLuxottica began working together in 2019 and launched their Ray-Ban-branded smart glasses in 2021. The devices allow users to take photos and videos via discreet cameras embedded in the frames, stream content to Meta’s apps, and interact with an AI assistant.

Last week, Meta said it had temporarily halted the international rollout of its Ray-Ban Display glasses due to supply constraints, opting to prioritize shipments to the U.S. market.

The report comes as Meta is also scaling back headcount at its Reality Labs division, cutting more than 1,000 jobs, according to a separate Bloomberg News report. Reality Labs, which develops virtual, augmented and mixed-reality products such as Meta Quest headsets and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, has incurred losses exceeding $60 billion since 2020.
