Amazon Plans Appeal of Italian Antitrust Penalty Despite Reduction, Report Says

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is preparing to challenge an Italian court decision that lowered a major antitrust fine, arguing that the penalty should be scrapped entirely, according to Italian newspaper MF on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Italy’s competition authority said it had cut the fine imposed on the U.S. e-commerce group to €752.4 million ($876.3 million), down from the €1.13 billion penalty originally levied in 2021. The sanction related to findings that Amazon had abused a dominant position by limiting competition in the country’s e-commerce logistics market.

The reduction followed a ruling by a regional administrative court in September last year. However, MF reported that Italy’s antitrust regulator also intends to appeal the decision that led to the lower fine.

The authority declined to comment on the matter, while Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
