Pinterest Inc. (NYSE:PINS) has entered into a cloud services agreement worth $4 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS), securing infrastructure support through 2031 in what represents the largest technology commitment in the company’s history.
The deal significantly expands Pinterest’s longstanding relationship with AWS and is intended to support the next phase of the platform’s artificial intelligence and infrastructure development.
Largest Infrastructure Agreement to Date
The new arrangement extends a partnership that began in 2010 between Pinterest and AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).
Through the agreement, Pinterest will gain access to cloud computing resources designed to support its growing AI initiatives and the infrastructure underpinning its visual discovery platform, which serves more than 600 million monthly active users.
Management said the investment is aimed at providing the scale and flexibility needed to support future innovation.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence Growth
“This expanded commitment with AWS gives us the compute flexibility, hardware optionality, and infrastructure efficiency to accelerate our AI vision for the next generation of visual discovery on Pinterest,” said Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s Chief Technology Officer.
The company plans to leverage AWS technologies to enhance machine learning capabilities, improve recommendation systems and expand the use of advanced visual search tools across its platform.
Pinterest has increasingly integrated AI into its user experience as it seeks to improve content discovery and engagement.
Adoption of AWS Custom Silicon
As part of the agreement, Pinterest will broaden its use of Amazon’s proprietary chip technologies.
This includes Trainium processors, which are designed for training and running large language models and vision-language models, as well as Graviton processors, which currently support approximately one-third of Pinterest’s computing infrastructure.
The company believes these technologies can help improve efficiency while supporting increasingly complex AI workloads.
Infrastructure Modernization Underway
Pinterest also intends to migrate portions of its infrastructure away from traditional EC2-based environments toward a Kubernetes architecture powered by Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).
According to the company, the transition is expected to enhance operational reliability while improving developer productivity and deployment efficiency.
The modernization effort forms part of a broader strategy to create a more scalable and flexible technology platform.
AI-Powered Discovery Tools Continue to Expand
The company recently introduced Pinterest Assistant, a conversational discovery feature powered by vision-language models.
Pinterest has also been investing heavily in multimodal AI systems and recommendation technologies designed to strengthen visual search and personalize user experiences.
These initiatives are expected to play a central role in the company’s long-term growth strategy.
AWS Highlights Strategic Importance of Partnership
“Pinterest is building some of the most advanced visual AI systems on AWS, powering discovery for more than 600 million users,” said Dave Brown, AWS Senior Vice President of Compute and ML Services.
The agreement will support Pinterest’s AI training requirements, inference operations and broader platform infrastructure through the end of the decade, reinforcing the company’s commitment to AI-driven innovation and large-scale cloud computing capabilities.
