Palladyne AI (NASDAQ:PDYN) moved higher on Wednesday morning after announcing that it had been awarded contracts by the U.S. Army to support development and testing of its SwarmOS autonomous swarm platform and Gremlin-X unmanned aerial vehicle.
Shares of the company rose approximately 8% following the announcement.
Army Program Supports Development and Validation Efforts
The awards were granted under the U.S. Army’s Competitive Disruptive Applications Program, with Palladyne AI selected through the Army’s Disruptive Applications Broad Agency Announcement process.
The contracts will provide funding for research, development and operational testing activities involving both the SwarmOS software platform and the Gremlin-X UAV alongside U.S. Army personnel.
Management said the programme is intended to evaluate how the technologies perform in real-world military scenarios.
SwarmOS Designed for Multi-Platform Autonomous Operations
SwarmOS is Palladyne AI’s edge-based autonomy software that allows a single operator to control multiple autonomous systems simultaneously, even when those systems are produced by different manufacturers.
The platform is designed to function on edge computing hardware and maintain operational capability in communications-denied, degraded or contested environments.
The company believes the technology can enhance battlefield flexibility by reducing operator workload while improving coordination among autonomous assets.
Gremlin-X Targets Affordable Precision Strike Missions
The Gremlin-X system is a reusable Group 2 unmanned aerial strike platform developed to provide military units with a lower-cost solution for engaging high-priority targets.
The multirotor aircraft is designed to deliver munitions accurately in denied, degraded, intermittent and limited operational environments.
Unlike many expendable systems, Gremlin-X is capable of returning after deployment, allowing it to be reused for future missions.
Demonstrations Planned Across Multiple Military Exercises
As part of the agreement, Palladyne AI will showcase SwarmOS and Gremlin-X during a series of exercises conducted by the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division in Colorado and California.
Testing will focus on reconnaissance and target acquisition missions, with SwarmOS integrated through the Android Team Awareness Kit, the Army’s command-and-control platform.
The demonstrations are intended to validate the effectiveness of autonomous swarm operations in support of frontline military requirements.
Northern Strike Exercise Provides Additional Exposure
The company will also participate in Northern Strike 26-2, a large-scale joint military exercise involving more than 9,000 participants.
The event will provide another opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of both SwarmOS and Gremlin-X in operational environments involving multiple military branches and mission profiles.
Expanding Presence in Defense Technology
Palladyne AI develops artificial intelligence-enabled autonomy solutions for defense and industrial applications.
In addition to autonomy software, the company’s portfolio includes advanced avionics systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, aerospace engineering services and precision-manufactured components.
The latest Army contracts represent a further step in the company’s efforts to expand adoption of its autonomous systems within the U.S. defense sector.
