CervoMed Shares Surge After Securing U.S. Patent Protection for Dementia Therapy (CRVO)

CervoMed Inc. (NASDAQ:CRVO) shares climbed 20% on Thursday after the company announced it had received a notice of allowance from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a new patent covering the use of its lead drug candidate, neflamapimod, in the treatment of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).

The development strengthens the biotechnology company’s intellectual property portfolio and could provide long-term protection for a key component of its clinical strategy.

Patent Targets Specific DLB Patient Population

The newly allowed patent relates to the treatment of dementia with Lewy bodies in patients who do not exhibit significant Alzheimer’s disease-related tau pathology, a group often referred to as having “pure DLB.”

According to the company, the patent is expected to remain in force until at least 2042, with the possibility of additional protection through future patent term extensions.

Strengthening Long-Term Commercial Position

CervoMed said the intellectual property is designed to support its approach to treating patients with pure DLB, a subgroup that can be identified through biomarkers such as plasma pTau levels or advanced brain imaging techniques.

The company believes this targeted strategy could help differentiate neflamapimod as development progresses and potentially strengthen its future commercial position if approved.

Focus on Age-Related Neurological Disorders

CervoMed is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing therapies for age-related neurodegenerative diseases and other brain disorders.

Neflamapimod remains one of the company’s key development programmes as it seeks to address significant unmet medical needs in neurological care.

Limited Treatment Options for Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Dementia with Lewy bodies is one of the most common forms of progressive dementia, yet treatment options remain limited.

CervoMed noted that there are currently no approved therapies specifically indicated for DLB in either the United States or the European Union, highlighting the potential importance of new treatment approaches for patients affected by the condition.

The patent news was welcomed by investors, who viewed the additional intellectual property protection as a positive step for the company’s long-term development strategy and value proposition.
