America’s Tungsten Supply Chain Comes Into Focus as New Defense Policy Highlights Strategic Importance of Domestic Critical Minerals

The United States is taking further steps to strengthen its defense supply chains and reduce reliance on vulnerable overseas sources of critical materials, a move that could have significant implications for strategic metals such as tungsten.

A new Executive Order from the White House has placed greater emphasis on ensuring that critical materials and components required for national security are sourced domestically or from trusted allied nations. The policy directs the Department of Defense to improve supply chain visibility, reduce dependence on unreliable foreign suppliers, and encourage defense contractors to qualify new domestic sources of critical minerals.

For tungsten, a metal widely recognised for its unique physical properties and importance across defense, aerospace, energy and advanced manufacturing industries, the policy direction highlights a growing strategic challenge: securing a reliable non-adversarial supply chain.

Why Tungsten Matters for U.S. Defense Security

Tungsten is one of the world’s most strategically important industrial metals. Its exceptional hardness, extremely high melting point and density make it difficult to replace in many high-performance applications.

The metal is used in areas including:

  • Armor-piercing ammunition and defense systems
  • Aerospace components
  • High-temperature industrial applications
  • Cutting tools and advanced manufacturing
  • Energy and technology applications

However, the global tungsten supply chain remains highly concentrated, creating concerns around security of supply. China dominates global tungsten production and processing, leaving Western economies seeking alternative sources to strengthen resilience.

The latest U.S. policy direction reinforces the importance of developing domestic mineral projects capable of supplying critical materials from within North America.

For tungsten specifically, the challenge is particularly significant: the United States currently has no meaningful primary tungsten production, despite the metal being classified as a strategic mineral by U.S. authorities.

A New Opportunity for Domestic Tungsten Development

As the U.S. government prioritises supply chain independence, companies developing domestic tungsten resources could become increasingly important participants in rebuilding America’s critical mineral infrastructure.

One company positioned directly within this theme is Guardian Metal Resources PLC (AMEX:GMTL).

Guardian Metal Resources is focused on developing U.S.-based tungsten supply through its Nevada projects, including its flagship Pilot Mountain Project, one of the largest undeveloped tungsten deposits in the United States.

Located in Nevada, a recognised mining-friendly jurisdiction, Pilot Mountain represents a potential pathway toward establishing a new domestic source of tungsten for the United States.

The project hosts a significant mineral resource at the Desert Scheelite deposit, with an indicated pit-constrained resource of 8.694 million tonnes grading 0.206% WO₃ and an inferred resource of 1.784 million tonnes grading 0.169% WO₃, alongside additional copper, silver and zinc credits.

Government Alignment and Strategic Importance

Guardian Metal’s strategy closely aligns with the broader U.S. objective of rebuilding domestic critical mineral supply chains.

The company has already received support through the U.S. Department of War, including a $6.2 million award to advance the Pilot Mountain pre-feasibility study under the Defense Production Act Title III framework.

This support highlights the strategic importance of developing secure sources of tungsten within the United States, particularly as policymakers increasingly focus on reducing exposure to concentrated foreign supply chains.

Pilot Mountain Economics Highlight Development Potential

Beyond its strategic relevance, Pilot Mountain has continued to progress as a potential future tungsten development project.

Guardian Metal’s recent pre-feasibility study outlined compelling project economics, including an after-tax net present value of $660.3 million and an internal rate of return of 59.6% under the base case scenario. Under higher tungsten pricing assumptions, the project economics strengthen further, highlighting the potential value of a domestic tungsten operation during a period of increasing supply chain focus.

The company has also highlighted the potential importance of its second tungsten asset, the Tempiute Project, another Nevada-based project with historical tungsten production.

The Bigger Picture: Rebuilding America’s Critical Mineral Independence

The latest U.S. defense supply chain measures represent a broader shift in how governments view critical minerals. The focus is no longer simply on resource availability — it is increasingly about where those resources come from, who controls processing capacity, and whether supply chains can withstand geopolitical disruption.

For tungsten, this creates a significant opportunity.

Developing a secure domestic tungsten supply chain could become an important part of America’s strategy to strengthen defense manufacturing, protect industrial capacity and reduce dependence on overseas suppliers.

With its Nevada-based projects, government engagement and focus on one of the most strategically important metals in the modern economy, Guardian Metal Resources is positioned at the centre of this emerging critical minerals opportunity.

As the United States accelerates efforts to secure its supply chains, domestic tungsten projects such as Pilot Mountain could play a vital role in supporting the next generation of American defense and industrial capability.
