Sierra Bancorp Reports 20% First-Half EPS Growth as Deposit Costs Decline

Sierra Bancorp delivered stronger first-half profitability and improved operating efficiency, although second-quarter net income and diluted earnings per share were slightly below the prior-year period.

Key Investor Takeaways

  • Sierra Bancorp (NASDAQ:BSRR) increased first-half diluted EPS by 20% to $1.72.
  • Second-quarter net income declined to $9.9 million from $10.6 million a year earlier.
  • Lower deposit costs supported a 3.75% first-half net interest margin.
  • Tangible book value per share rose to $26.19, strengthening the bank’s capital position.
  • Management expects its expanding loan pipeline to support net loan growth during the second half of 2026.

Why BSRR Stock Is in Focus

Sierra Bancorp reported second-quarter net income of $9.9 million, or $0.77 per diluted share, compared with $10.6 million, or $0.78 per diluted share, in the same quarter last year.

Quarterly return on average assets was 1.09%, while return on average equity reached 10.90%.

The first-half figures showed stronger momentum. Net income increased to $22.4 million from $19.7 million, while diluted earnings per share rose 20% to $1.72.

First-half return on average assets improved to 1.24% from 1.09%, and return on average equity increased to 12.38% from 11.26%.

Operating efficiency also strengthened. Sierra Bancorp’s efficiency ratio improved to 57.70% from 60.00%, while year-to-date expenses declined by nearly 2%, according to the company.

Why This Matters for Investors

The results present a mixed near-term earnings picture. Slightly lower second-quarter profit may weigh on sentiment, but stronger first-half returns and cost control suggest the underlying profitability trend remains constructive.

Deposit funding is a central part of the investment case. Total deposits increased by $54.6 million from the end of 2025, while core non-maturity deposits rose by $67.8 million.

Noninterest-bearing deposits represented 35% of total deposits, helping the bank reduce its cost of total deposits to 1.11% from 1.30% a year earlier. The cost of funds also declined to 1.31% from 1.49%.

Those funding improvements may help protect net interest margin if competitive deposit pressures continue. First-half net interest margin rose four basis points to 3.75%.

The bank also reported a tangible common equity ratio of 9.19%, a Community Bank Leverage Ratio of 12.25% and total primary and secondary liquidity sources of $1.9 billion. These figures suggest Sierra Bancorp retains financial flexibility while returning capital through dividends and share repurchases.

Tangible book value per share increased to $26.19 from $23.42 at the end of 2025. The company also repurchased 396,429 shares during the first half and declared a quarterly dividend of $0.27 per share.

What to Watch Next

Investors will be watching whether the recent increase in Sierra Bancorp’s loan pipeline converts into net loan growth during the second half of 2026.

Further changes in deposit costs, net interest margin and operating expenses will also be important for determining whether the bank can maintain its improved first-half profitability.
