Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) shares jumped 12.3% in pre-market trading after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the social media company will enter the S&P 500 before the opening bell on August 18.
Reddit will replace AvalonBay Communities, which is leaving the benchmark in connection with its pending acquisition by fellow S&P 500 member Equity Residential.
The announcement was released after Thursday’s market close, triggering an immediate rally in Reddit during extended trading. That momentum continued firmly into Friday’s pre-market session.
Index inclusion creates institutional buying catalyst
Much of the initial market reaction reflects the mechanics associated with joining one of the world’s most closely followed equity benchmarks.
Passive investment funds and ETFs designed to track the S&P 500 will need to add Reddit shares to their portfolios to replicate the index. This creates a concentrated source of institutional demand between the announcement and the August 18 effective date.
Index inclusion can also increase a company’s visibility among institutional investors and place its shares in portfolios that previously had no requirement to hold the stock.
Reddit’s improving financial performance supports inclusion
The index promotion comes alongside a significant improvement in Reddit’s financial profile.
The company generated approximately $805 million in second-quarter 2026 revenue, representing growth of 61% from the same period a year earlier.
Reddit also recently satisfied the S&P 500’s profitability requirements after recording its first full year of positive GAAP net income in 2025.
Meeting that requirement opened the door to potential inclusion in the benchmark for the first time since Reddit completed its initial public offering in March 2024.
The combination of rapid revenue expansion and sustained profitability has strengthened the company’s standing as a publicly traded social media platform.
Broader markets provide supportive backdrop
The wider U.S. equity market was modestly positive in pre-market trading, with the S&P 500 up 0.1% and the Nasdaq gaining 0.2%.
Sentiment has been supported by a relatively constructive inflation backdrop following July’s CPI report, which showed annual inflation at 3.4%.
The figures have helped keep expectations for Federal Reserve monetary policy relatively stable, providing a calmer environment for growth and technology-related stocks.
Reddit strengthens its position among major social media stocks
Once admitted to the S&P 500, Reddit will become one of a relatively small number of pure-play social media businesses represented in the benchmark.
Meta Platforms remains the most obvious listed peer for comparison, although the companies differ substantially in scale, business model and advertising reach.
Membership of the S&P 500 represents another significant milestone for Reddit following its March 2024 stock market debut and subsequent expansion of its advertising and monetisation businesses.
Reddit stock climbs above $177
The combination of S&P 500 inclusion, expected passive-fund buying, rapid revenue growth and a relatively stable macroeconomic backdrop drove one of Reddit’s strongest recent market moves.
The stock climbed to $177.56 in pre-market trading, well above its previous close of $158.12.
Despite the sharp increase, Reddit remained considerably below its 52-week high of $282.95, leaving investors focused on whether index-related demand and continued earnings growth can support further gains after the August 18 inclusion takes effect.
